When people think about creative careers, they often imagine total freedom: sleeping in, working whenever inspiration hits, and just “making things look cool.” In reality, working as a publication designer is creative and structured. You’re part of a professional team, and every issue has a deadline.
7:00 AM — Morning Routine
Wake up, get ready, grab coffee, and head into the office. Creative jobs are still professional jobs, and being on time matters.
9:00 AM — Check in
Once at your desk, you check your email and see what articles or images have come in. There are usually updates from editors about what needs to be designed or revised.
9:30 AM — Design Time
This is the main part of the day. You’re building page layouts in InDesign, placing photos, adjusting fonts, and making sure everything looks clean and readable.
12:30 PM — Lunch
Take a break from the screen. Maybe grab lunch with coworkers and talk about upcoming issues or design trends.
1:30 PM – Meetings/Feedback
There may be a short meeting to go over the next issue or review a cover concept. You might also get feedback from editors and make revisions to your layouts.
3:00 PM — Refining & Finalizing
This is where small details get fixed. Spacing, alignment, image placement… everything has to feel polished before it goes to print.
5:30 PM — Wrap Up
Save files, organize projects, and plan what needs to be finished tomorrow. Magazine publishing runs on deadlines, so staying organized is key.
